In the Bear Millions

October 2007 Entrepreneur CoverI picked up the October edition of Entrepreneur Magazine, and was pleasantly surprised to find the Bear Naked owners, Kelly Flatley and Brendan Synnott, as one of the features in an article titled, Young Millionaires. According to the article their projected sales for 2007 is $50 million. That’s not half bad for starting a business while living with your parents.

There is no doubt that it took a lot of work to get to this point, but it’s amazing how easy selling an incredible product can become

Discovering Empathy

Have Empathy for this Diverse Group of People

Empathy is a hot topic among advertisers, marketers, bloggers, and even dentists, doctors and nurses in the medical field.

For the longest time empathy was viewed as a genetic quality–either you were born with it or you weren’t. More recently, many have taken on the belief that although some may genetically be more empathetic than others, but that empathy is something that can be learned.

One of the best resources that I’ve found with applicable information on the power of empathy is Dan Pink’s, A Whole New Mind. At the end of his section on empathy, Pink lists some workbook-style ideas on how you can learn to be more empathetic. I’ve listed some of his ideas here, as well as few ideas of my own. Enjoy!

Get in the Middle

If you want to relate to a specific group, then do what they do. Hang out where they hangout. Shop where they shop.

Scene from the movie What Women Want, Mel GibsonThis is something that advertisers and marketers have been doing for decades. If you want to sell toothpaste, then actually use the toothpaste and only then will you begin to see it with the eyes of the consumer. Hollywood comically acts out this idea in the movie, What Women Want, in which Mel Gibson tries to “think like a broad.”

Social Media has made it easy to connect with specific groups on-line. Although it is nothing like interacting with a person face to face, it is a quick way to get involved with the conversation.

Study Ekman

Paul Ekman is the world’s foremost expert on facial expressions and the professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. He just released the second edition of his most recent book, Emotions Revealed.

Also, check out Malcolm Gladwell’s bestseller, Blink, in which Gladwell features some studies done by Ekman.

Take An Acting Class

It sounds crazy I know, but acting classes can help you gain a greater understanding of human emotions. Dan Pink says that “increasing numbers of physicians are working to understand and deepen their Empathy by taking acting classes.” Most local colleges offer evening classes.

Listen

Learn to listen to the people you can’t stand. Don’t tune out when you hear something you disagree with, and don’t immediately interject with a differing opinion. The longer you listen to someone, the greater the chance that they will actually listen and digest your point of view. This will help you to grow into someone who can even relate to those that live in sharp contrast to your own life.

Volunteer

Get out and help people living lives that are far different from your own. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or work a few days with Habitat for Humanity. You will find that the more time you spend there, the easier it becomes to see yourself in their shoes.

Test Yourself

Psychologists have developed a collection tests to measure empathy and associated traits, many of which are available on-line for free. Here is a short list of interesting tests that are far from the standard SAT and IQ tests you are probably used to.

Empathy Quotient – This test determines if you have a “female brain” or a “male brain.” According to Simon Baron-Cohen, “The female brain is predominantly hard-wired for empathy. The male brain is predominantly hard-wired for understanding and building systems.” He proposes this theory in his book, The Essential Difference: Men, Women and the Extreme Male Brain.

Guardian Unlimited’s The Empathy Quotient - intended to measure how easily you pick up on other people’s feelings and how strongly you are affected by other people’s feelings.

Spot the Fake Smile - The BBC’s experiment is designed to test whether you can spot the difference between a fake smile and a real one.

Mind in the Eyes - Another Simon Baron-Cohen test that measures your ability to identify a person’s emotion by viewing only the person’s eyes.

I just wish I could find someone who sells my favorite flavor, Banana Nut. For now I guess I will just have to settle for Fruit and Nut.

The Formula for Creating a Successful Social Network

Social Network Scientist

There are many opinions floating around the web as to what the exact formula is for creating a successful social network.

The Internet Business and e-commerce news site, BizReport, sum up their take on the matter with, “Revenue is the key to social network success.”

I agree that a social sites ability to generate revenue, plays a very important part in its existence (and in some cases, it’s extinction), but how much revenue a social site is generating, is more of a symptom of a network’s overall health than it is the key to developing a growing network. To put the main focus on making money, especially in the infantile stages of a social network’s development, misses the true essence of what a social network thrives on.

Information Week with 5 Keys To Social Networking Success and TNL.net posting 5 Reasons Why Social Networks Can Succeed. Both point out important traits and aspects of social network sites that are important to their success, but neither directly identify the one aspect that believe is the cornerstone to a successful social network site.

The number one key to the success of social networks is their ability to carry valuable conversations inside and outside of the network. The Cluetrain Guys have been telling us since 1999, “markets are conversations.” The phrase rings true 8 years later, as online communications have been integrated even further into our lives, well beyond the primitive concept of the web. The voices of markets in conversation are louder than ever before.

The term “markets,” is generally thought of as a term specifically associated with marketing and selling, but markets don’t start and stop with the buying and selling of products and services. Markets extend far beyond the definition many have slapped on the term. Markets exist in everywhere, from corporate board members to that small group of boy scouts that meets down the street. Markets are clusters, some small, some large, some ginormous.

WD-40 Oil and a BoomerangSocial sites thrive on conversation. They are conversations. When I say “conversation,” I’m talking about a true dialogue between two or more people. This eliminates talking “at” and “to,” and encourages talking “with.” This means removing conversation roadblocks, and introducing methods that act as enzymes for connecting users and creating valuable conversation. To put is simply, make sure your social site possesses these two traits:

  1. Make it Oily, so that conversations slide across the network on onto the web and spread easily.

  2. Shape it like Boomerang, so that conversations always return to the network.

It’s important to realize, that creating conversation shouldn’t be the goal of a social site. Social networks are conversations, but they are created and exist through the users in the network. The goal should be to provide a platform that enhances users ability to connect and communicate with each other. It’s our human nature to want share with others of like mind (and sometimes of a very different mind). Conversations have existed even before humans wore clothes, and believe me, they will continue, whether your social site exists or not. I say this not to be a stick in the mud, but I want to present a clear understanding of the role social networks play in conversation.

Not all conversation will lift a social network off the ground. It is key for conversation to be “valuable” to everyone participating. Worthless conversations won’t spread.

The value of a conversation is very subjective to say the least. Twitter provides us with a good example of the subjective nature of conversation. There are many people who find no value in being limited to communicate with only 140 characters, but others such as Micro Persuasion’s Steve Rubel, have found Twitter to be a great way to keep the conversation flowing and keep readers connected and informed in between blog posts.

Paving the way for valuable conversation is no easy task. Valuable conversation develops when users are given the right balance of freedom while the network maintains right amount of control.

MySpace is an example of a social site that some would argue allows users too much freedom. Although it is still the largest social site on the web, many of its users are moving away from the network because they feel too many roadblocks have been removed, allowing an overwhelming amount of spam, fake identities, and private accounts, all of which make it incredibly hard for conversation to develop. Users are left filtering content more, and talking less.

This retreat from MySpace has led many users to Facebook, which is one of the most talked about social networks on the web right now. Facebook maintains more control over conversations by only allowing communication between users that they are connected either directly, through a network, or group. They have also put in place, a strict policy on mass messaging and spam. Many have found this system to be very effective in keeping out unwanted conversations that not only annoy us and take up time, but also water down valuable conversation.

Facebook doesn’t have all the answers. As I said before, valuable conversation is very subjective. There are still those that feel like Facebook has put too many barriers in the way of conversation.

The exact formula for creating a successful social network has yet to developed, because the web is an ever-changing medium, but one ingredient remains constant:

valuable conversations

Who Do You Want Tamara to Interview?

Tamara Adlin of Aldin, Inc. and UX PioneersAfter my praise and plug of her interview with Seth Godin at UX Pioneers, Tamara Aldin has responded, and she wants your help! She is asking for suggestions on who she should interview next.

Have any killer ideas?

Peelers, post your interview suggestions for Tamara in the comments here.

Not Another Seth Godin Interview

Marketing Guru and author Seth GodinThis UX Pioneers interview with Seth Godin almost flew under the radar. Luckily, Seth threw the link to the interview out in a short blurb on his blog.

We’ve read plenty of interviews with Seth already, so what else could there be to talk about?

Plenty, it seems, if you like stories about CB radio and discussing the order of the alphabet. Tamara Adlin, of UX Pioneers was able to get deeper into the head of Seth, than I think anyone has.

If you are a fan of Godin, I would suggest reading the whole interview, but here is one of my favorite quotes:

I’ve been able to make a career out of challenging people who think that utility is what consumers purchase; who think that facts are more important than stories. That’s what you were taught in school for 20 years. You were taught that you have to have your facts right; that you have to get 1,600 on the SAT.

Now that my kids are in school, I’m aghast at how much time is wasted teaching facts. It’s not an accident that most organizations hire the way they were hired. They hire the way they were trained in school, which is, “Show me you’ve done this job before for someone else, and I’ll hire you.”

That’s bogus.

Ronald Jenkees, The Real Deal

Ronald Jenkees Immitates no otherI knew it was time to pay attention to this self-proclaimed “nerd” from Kentucky, when I heard him make a connection from the classic rock band, Led Zeppelin, to hip-hop artists Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Ronald clearly understands the concept that “if you want to get noticed you can’t be a clone.” He doesn’t just bang around on a synthesizer imitating his favorite artists. He takes all of his musical influences, which I’ll note, appear to be all over the map, dumps them in a plastic bowl and pours his own special “Ronald Sauce” all over them.

To many, the persona that Ronald exhibits to the world via a camcorder from his bedroom, is in complete contradiction to what we normally think of in terms of successful musicians, celebrities, or anyone with influence for that matter. However, Ronald blows that idea out of the water with a strong following of over 6000 and rising subscribers on Youtube. He also recently released his long awaited CD, which is available on iTunes and at ronaldjenkees.com.

I believe his unique mix of nerd, Kentucky hick, and spare bedroom hip-hop gangsta may be awkward for some, but is largely what his success can be attributed to. Ronald’s not a clone of anyone. He’s 100% pure Ronald Jenkees. And lets not forget his unbelievable sound that I cannot begin to describe with words.

Check out one of his latest Youtube video to see him in action:

I don’t think we have heard the last of Ronald Jenkees. In fact, I think this is just the beginning. I know it is for me. I bought his CD ten minutes ago on iTunes.

——-

The first few times I watched Ronald I was amazed by his musical ability, but I just wasn’t quite sure if he was putting on an act with the coke bottle glasses and lame jokes. After watching all of his music videos on Youtube, I’ve come to the conclusion that if he’s not the real deal he has got his act down cold, and isn’t afraid of criticism.

So what do you think?

Is the real Ronald Jenkees the same guy that thousands are watching on Youtube?

Where do you think Ronald’s success stems from?
